Welcome

Click here to explore the soundscapes of Edinburgh!

Welcome to my soundscape project! Please feel free to leave a comment; I would love to hear other people’s opinions on my project and the sounds I have captured, or just your own thoughts on sounds or the soundscape in general.

Go to the Edinburgh Soundscape drop down menu above or click here to go to the main page.

Or go to my blog for the latest progress on my project and to see how the project has evolved.

There is also extra material: information on the Edinburgh tram works; a comparison of the December soundscape of Edinburgh with sounds from Glasgow in December; and a comparison between the November recordings in Edinburgh and Union Terrace Gardens, Aberdeen.

What is a soundscape?

Our soundscape is our sonic environment; the sounds that surround us everywhere in our every day life. In Western society today, it is our sense of sight that dominates how we experience the world. However there is a rich aural world around us that when actively listened to, can be just as astounding and interesting as the world we see.

About my project

My project is concerned with the sounds that can be heard in East Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh. I have taken two sets of recordings. The first was taken on November 8th 2012, on a typical autumn day; the second was taken four weeks later, when the festive events fill the gardens. I thought it would be interesting to take a recording when the festivities were not there, to compare them and to fully appreciate the soundscape in December, which I feel is a significant aspect of the Christmas atmosphere.

This is a really interesting idea! Love the concept of the project…. really interesting how The Mound is bland weeks before the Edinburgh market, but when the market is there, it’s clear that the place is ‘buzzing’ with exciting activity. Really shows the importance of sound in our environment.

Thanks for your comment! I agree, it is very different. I don’t think I would have noticed before how much the soundscape can add to the Christmas atmosphere if it wasn’t for taking these recordings, it really does sound dramatically different.
